Preah Sihanouk Strengthens Tourism and Investment Ties with China Through New Connectivity Drive

SIHANOUKVILLE — Preah Sihanouk provincial authorities are accelerating efforts to strengthen tourism and economic ties with China through expanded business partnerships, improved direct flight connectivity, and targeted investment incentives.

Contents
  • Key Initiatives to Boost Chinese Tourism and Investment
  • Leveraging Policy Support and Visa Schemes

The initiative comes as Cambodia steps up efforts to position the coastal region as a primary destination under its ongoing “Green Season” national tourism campaign.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Tourism Business Forum 2026 in Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk Deputy Governor Long Dimanche emphasized that the two-day forum established concrete avenues for Cambodian and Chinese operators to expand regional travel trade.

Key Initiatives to Boost Chinese Tourism and Investment

The forum—held under the theme “Promote the Green Season Campaign: Visit Preah Sihanouk Province – Cambodia”—brought together government officials, tourism associations, investors, and travel operators from both nations.

To capitalize on the event’s momentum, provincial authorities outlined five main strategic priorities:

  1. Expanding Business-to-Business (B2B) Partnerships: Establishing direct linkages between Cambodian hospitality providers and Chinese travel agencies.
  2. Upgrading High-End Services: Elevating service quality across luxury accommodation, dining, and eco-tourism sectors.
  3. Promoting Investment Incentives: Encouraging Chinese firms to utilize the Special Investment Promotion Programme, which provides tax exemptions and streamlined licensing through 2027.
  4. Improving Transport Connectivity: Expanding direct flight connections between major Chinese cities and Sihanouk International Airport.
  5. Guaranteeing Security and Hospitality: Reinforcing safety, security, and quality hospitality standards across all provincial destinations.

Leveraging Policy Support and Visa Schemes

The regional push aligns with broader Royal Government policies designed to accelerate international arrivals following global economic headwinds. Notably, Cambodia instituted a temporary visa exemption for Chinese tourists running from June 15 to October 15, 2026, lowering travel barriers during the traditional off-peak season.

Deputy Governor Dimanche reaffirmed the province’s commitment to developing sustainable, green, and smart tourism assets—referring to the sector as Cambodia’s “green gold”.
