PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s improving safety environment and intensified crackdown on cybercrime operations are restoring international investor confidence and paving the way for expanded economic collaboration, according to Singapore’s Ambassador to Cambodia, Steven Pang Chee Wee.
Speaking during a courtesy meeting with Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng, Ambassador Steven highlighted that safety remains the primary consideration for international business leaders. He noted that he consistently assures Singaporean firms that Phnom Penh and Cambodia are secure, viable destinations for direct investment.
Expanding Bilateral Ties Across Key Sectors
The discussion underscored growing connectivity between the two ASEAN nations, supported by four daily direct flights linking Singapore and Cambodia. Ambassador Steven emphasized that this air connectivity fosters stronger trade, business partnerships, and tourist traffic.
Looking ahead, Singapore and Cambodia plan to deepen strategic cooperation across four priority sectors:
- Economic Development & Trade: Facilitating cross-border investment and trade integration.
- Education & Capacity Building: Expanding institutional partnerships and skills development.
- Healthcare & Wellness: Strengthening healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.
- Tourism & Hospitality: Promoting Cambodia’s broader cultural assets, gastronomy, and eco-tourism beyond Angkor Wat.
Transitioning Toward a Transparent “White Economy”
Ambassador Steven commended the Cambodian government and Phnom Penh municipal authorities for taking decisive measures against illicit online scam networks.
Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng acknowledged that cybercrime and technology-based scams represent a complex, transnational challenge faced globally. However, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment under Prime Minister Hun Manet to transform Cambodia’s market landscape.
“Online scams are a complex issue that is not unique to Cambodia, but rather a global problem. However, under the strong commitment of Prime Minister Hun Manet, Cambodia is determined to move toward a ‘white economy’—one that is transparent, lawful, and free from criminal activities,” stated Governor Khuong Sreng.
The ongoing law enforcement push aims to eliminate illicit operations, enhance regulatory compliance, and position Cambodia as a trusted hub for legitimate foreign capital in Southeast Asia.
