PHNOM PENH — The Embassy of India in Phnom Penh celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with a series of events, including a flag-hoisting ceremony at the Embassy premises on August 15, 2026, and a diplomatic reception at Hotel Sofitel Phnom Penh on August 17, 2026.
Flag-Hoisting and Cultural Ceremonies (August 15)
The morning celebrations commenced at the Embassy with the singing of Vande Mataram, followed by the hoisting of the Indian National Flag by Ambassador Vanlalvawna Bawitlung and the National Anthem.

The Ambassador read out excerpts from the Hon’ble President of India’s Address to the Nation.
Program Highlights:
- Diaspora Performances: Traditional dances, patriotic songs, and poetry recitals performed by embassy officials and diaspora members.
- Competitions & Awards: Presentation of certificates to the Cambodian winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz, alongside prizes for participants of the Viksit Bharat Drawing Competition held during Bharat Utsav on August 9, 2026.
Diplomatic Reception at Sofitel Phnom Penh (August 17)
A diplomatic reception was hosted at Sofitel Phnom Penh to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Indian independence.
H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, attended as the Chief Guest. The event gathered senior Royal Government of Cambodia officials, foreign diplomats, members of the Oknha Association, and representatives of the Indian business and diaspora communities.
Remarks on Economic Growth and Bilateral Relations
In his address, Ambassador Bawitlung detailed India’s 79-year journey since independence in 1947, highlighting its status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy and its advancements in IT, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, space, and fintech toward achieving the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
He also outlined key milestones in India–Cambodia relations:
- Commercial & Trade Growth: Heightened business interactions across IT, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and education.
- Capacity Building & Heritage: Progress under ICCR scholarships, ITEC training programs, heritage conservation projects, and Quick Impact Projects (QIPs).
- New Outreach Initiatives: The establishment of a dedicated Defence Wing and a Yoga and Dance Centre at the Embassy in Phnom Penh.
The reception featured a One District One Product (ODOP) exhibition showcasing Indian handicrafts, along with classical dance and yoga demonstrations.
