Cambodia is home to some of Southeast Asia’s most unique and rich arts and crafts. Throughout Cambodia’s history, its culture has been influenced and driven by religious principles. The blend of indigenous animistic beliefs and the historically Indian religions Hinduism and Buddhism produced a distinct Khmer style.

Throughout history, Cambodian artisans and craftsmen have established a really distinctive and exquisitely Khmer style of arts and crafts. While each artist has his or her own unique style, they all reflect the Khmer legacy. Annie, a young jewellery designer from Siem Reap who is striving to develop her business in the market, is one of them.

Annie founded her jewellery brand “Annie’s Jewelry” in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak. Annei has always had an interest in jewellery creation; therefore, she educated herself in the field in order to become a skilled designer. After some time, she established a small showroom where she makes and sells a variety of jewellery.

Annie joined Enterprise SolutionFinders cohort1 program which was trained by the Enterprise Vision Academy and supported by Khmer Enterprise. With the help of a mentor, she learned to develop a business model, and understand her market segment, finances, and operations to reach target clients effectively.

Annie said to The Better Cambodia,

“Our main products are necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, and souvenirs. The main parts are made from recycled and reusable materials, which helps keep the environment safe. My jewellery is handcrafted in the Khmer tradition style using copper scrap, silk, and gemstones.”

“Our jewellery is displayed at different events, including weekend pop-up markets, festivals, and fair trades in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. “We also use social media and have three physical stores in Siem Reap and one in Phnom Penh where customers can visit to have their own customized jewellery made.”

“When I started this business, I was worried about two things: making things that might be bad for my health and obtaining raw materials. I had to slice and crush the raw materials with a machine. I didn’t like the dust and smell. I also had to borrow old brass from friends and buy it at the market until I had enough to make jewellery.”

“Despite the fact that we are very different from one another, my sister has always been the person who has inspired and motivated me the most. She encouraged me to pursue the things that I am most interested in and to use my passion to make positive change in society.”

“When starting a business, it is essential for youths to prioritise their passion. To increase your chances of accomplishing your goal, you should educate yourself and seek support from others if necessary. Improve upon your previous attempts by analysing them and working hard.”
