The new Phnom Penh international airport, known as the Techo International Airport, is expected to open in 2024.
The $1.5 billion project, funded by the Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd (CAIC), is being built on 2,600 hectares in southern Kandal and Takeo provinces by the China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co., Ltd.
The construction of the 4F-class airport, the world’s highest class, began in 2019.
Sinn Chanserey Vutha, Undersecretary of State and Spokesman for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, stated that once operational, the new airport will play a critical role in increasing Cambodia’s economic growth and tourism.
“According to the CAIC’s new master schedule, the project’s first phase is projected to be finished in the middle of 2024,” he told the press.
According to the contractor, more than half of the construction work had been done to date.
According to the master plan, the new airport will be able to handle 13 million passengers per year in the first phase, 30 million passengers in the second phase in 2030, and up to 50 million passengers in the third phase in 2050.
The initiative is the result of strong collaboration between Cambodia and China under the Belt and Road Initiative.
