Prime Minister Hun Manet recently shared insights on the promising capabilities of the Techo International Airport (TIA), poised to become a pivotal hub with the capacity to accommodate up to 50 million passengers annually. This strategic development is anticipated to enhance international tourism, stimulate logistics growth, and amplify Cambodia’s global recognition.
During a visit to monitor the ongoing construction of TIA’s initial phase, Hun Manet highlighted that the airport is being designed to conform to 4F class standards, enabling it to service some of the largest aircraft in operation today, such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747.
The premier detailed the phased development plan for TIA, which is set to gradually increase its passenger handling capacity. The initial phase aims to cater to around 13 million passengers per year, followed by an expansion in the second phase to support 30 million travelers. The final phase is projected to elevate the capacity to the full 50 million passengers, upon the project’s completion.
The inception of this ambitious airport project was propelled by the forward-thinking vision of former Prime Minister Hun Sen. The Techo International Airport is being constructed over a sprawling 2,600 hectares at an estimated cost of $1.5 billion, under the aegis of the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC). Strategically situated between Takhmao city and Takeo province, the airport is expected to become a landmark development in Kandal province.
Hun Manet underscored TIA’s multifaceted benefits, including its potential to draw international tourists through state-of-the-art amenities, bolster logistical efficiencies, and stand as a monumental project that elevates Cambodia’s stature on the global stage. The airport is also foreseen to spur economic activity and provide employment opportunities in the southwestern regions of Cambodia.
The Prime Minister reflected on his experiences with major airports worldwide, noting a particular sense of pride and accomplishment in the development of TIA as a significant national achievement. He also addressed concerns surrounding the Funan-Techo Canal project, emphasizing confidence in the project’s positive impact, contrary to some negative speculations.
The forthcoming Tonle Bassac Navigation Road and Logistics System Project, or the ‘Funan-Techo Canal’ project, with an investment of $1.7 billion, is set to commence with a groundbreaking ceremony later this year. This event was marked by the presence of distinguished guests, including senior ministers, financial institution leaders, and over 800 construction professionals and workers, showcasing a collective effort towards realizing this monumental infrastructure project.
