In an effort to revitalize and promote the use of Cambodia’s national currency, the National Bank of Cambodia has announced the launch of the “Love the Riel” campaign. This initiative, set to run from March 20 to 29, 2024, invites citizens to exchange their old or damaged riel banknotes for new ones without any cost. The campaign is a collaborative effort between the National Bank and various banking and financial institutions across provincial and municipal areas.
The “Love the Riel” campaign is timed to coincide with the 44th anniversary of the riel banknote’s introduction on March 20, 1980. This initiative not only celebrates the long history of Cambodia’s currency but also aligns with the broader policy aimed at encouraging the use of the riel in everyday transactions.
The National Bank of Cambodia has made provisions for the public to exchange their worn and aged riel banknotes at all of its branches throughout the capital and provinces. The bank has ensured that these exchanges can be made every working day from 7:30 to 11:00 am, extending the opportunity beyond the campaign period to facilitate greater convenience for the public.
This campaign represents a significant step by the National Bank towards fostering a stronger economic and societal commitment to Cambodia’s currency. By encouraging the circulation of new and undamaged banknotes, the initiative seeks to enhance the overall aesthetic and functional appeal of the riel, thereby reinforcing its value and utility in the nation’s economic landscape.
The National Bank’s call to action encourages citizens to engage more actively in the use of the riel, emphasizing the positive impact that widespread adoption of the national currency can have on the Cambodian economy and society at large. This initiative reflects a concerted effort to nurture a sense of pride and confidence in the national currency, promoting its use as a symbol of Cambodia’s economic resilience and cultural identity.
