In January 2024, Cambodia saw a significant influx of fixed-asset investments, totaling over $187 million, as reported by the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC). This financial boost was encapsulated in the approval of 32 new investment projects, poised to create approximately 29,000 job opportunities across the nation.
The investment landscape for the month was diverse, with projects ranging from an electronics manufacturing facility and an assembly plant for electric bikes and motorbikes to a steel production factory and a garment and textile manufacturing unit. This variety underscores Cambodia’s growing appeal across multiple industrial sectors.
A substantial portion of the investment, exceeding 78%, originated from China, showcasing the strong economic ties between the two countries. Other notable contributions came from Singapore (9.65%), the United States (5.34%), South Korea (3.55%), and domestic investors (2.73%), highlighting a broad international interest in Cambodia’s economic environment.
The surge in investment can be attributed to several key factors, including the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement, the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement, and the recent introduction of Cambodia’s new investment law. These strategic moves have significantly enhanced the nation’s attractiveness to foreign direct investment.
Penn Sovicheat, Secretary of State and spokesperson for the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, emphasized the positive impact of these investments. He highlighted the introduction of new capital and technologies into the Cambodian market, along with the creation of numerous employment opportunities for the local populace, as critical drivers for the country’s ongoing economic development and prosperity.
