Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism Huot Hak hosted the United Arab Emirates Ambassador Obaid Saeed Obaid Bintaresh Aldhaheri for an official working discussion on Monday, July 6, 2026. Meeting at the Ministry of Tourism headquarters, the delegation reviewed their growing bilateral tourism cooperation framework first initiated in May 2025. The high-level talks focused primarily on driving strategic tourism expansion between Cambodia and UAE. Specifically, both sides evaluated mechanisms to accelerate visitor traffic by strengthening international air networks and simplifying immigration rules.
A core focus centered on studying a formal UAE proposal for a mutual tourist visa exemption to eliminate cross-border travel barriers. Consequently, this policy evaluation aims to stimulate sustained vacation and business travel exchanges between the two nations.
Etihad Airways Direct Flight Paths Anchor Middle East Aviation
Ambassador Aldhaheri highlighted the operational progress of daily transit networks, focusing on the number of international passengers using Etihad Airways. The carrier has run direct flights connecting Abu Dhabi and Phnom Penh since late 2025. Minister Huot Hak expressed gratitude for this infrastructure connection, noting that the route bridges Cambodia directly to critical global travel hubs. Therefore, the established flight path makes it easier for Middle Eastern holidaymakers to plan direct itineraries.
Additionally, the timing of these talks coincides with the 32nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and the UAE in 2026. This longstanding diplomatic baseline provides a highly reliable foundation for public and private entities to expand joint investments. Beyond core tourism expansion between Cambodia and UAE, the nations intend to scale collaborative commercial efforts in aviation, trade, and regional investment pipelines.
Growing Arrival Metrics Signal Untapped Market Potential
Official arrival metrics reveal clear growth opportunities within the Gulf corridor despite disruptions from ongoing regional conflicts. In 2025, Cambodia welcomed a total of 5.6 million global tourists, which included nearly 3,500 travelers arriving from the Middle East. Furthermore, data from the first five months of 2026 shows the country hosted nearly 1.6 million international arrivals. Out of these, more than 1,200 visitors originated from Middle Eastern markets.
“The direct air connection has enhanced Cambodia’s connectivity to global gateways,” stated Minister Huot Hak. He added that the ministry is committed to studying travel facilitation measures to welcome more Middle Eastern delegates and leisure groups.
Overall, the ongoing discussions show a joint commitment to building an accessible travel corridor. By combining direct flights with potential visa waivers, both countries are setting up a highly efficient tourism environment. Ultimately, this balanced approach to tourism expansion between Cambodia and UAE will diversify Cambodia’s visitor base while building long-term travel networks across the Gulf.
