On Monday, April 22, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet set off from Phnom Penh to partake in the 80th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP), held in Bangkok, Thailand. His involvement came at the personal invitation of the esteemed Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, who serves as the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Executive Secretary of ESCAP. The news of his departure was officially announced in a press release by the Cambodian Foreign Ministry on April 17, 2024.

The session in Bangkok, convened under the significant heading “Leveraging Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific,” aims to explore the vast potential of digital technologies. The discussions will focus on identifying strategies through which digital advancements can foster sustainable development across the Asia and Pacific regions. A critical aspect of this year’s conference is crafting approaches to leverage tech-based solutions not only to address pressing global challenges but also to fast-track the accomplishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The annual congregation of the ESCAP brings together heads of state, policymakers, technology innovators, and industry leaders to ponder and strategize over the role digital innovation plays in redefining the landscape of sustainable development. The focus is inherently on harnessing the power of digitalization to create inclusive, resilient, and sustainable futures for all nations within the geographical confines of Asia and the Pacific.

The participation of Prime Minister Hun Manet in such a pivotal event underscores Cambodia’s commitment to integrating digital technology in its developmental roadmap. It highlights the country’s proactiveness in seeking collaborative, regional solutions to global challenges, with a targeted focus on achieving the SDGs. This assembly serves as a platform for nations in the Asia and the Pacific region to collectively deliberate on advancements, share knowledge, and strengthen regional cooperation for the broader goal of sustainable development in an increasingly digital era.
