The construction of a new tourist port on Koh Tonsay, also known as Rabbit Island, is progressing as planned and is currently about 90% finished, according to Som Piseth, the Governor of Kep Province. This development, which is part of a broader initiative to enhance tourism infrastructure in the area, is anticipated to significantly boost the local economy and accessibility to the island.
Funded through a loan exceeding $1.6 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the port project aligns with Kep Province’s strategic vision to promote eco-tourism and upscale resort experiences. The region, known for its rich history and natural beauty, has been increasingly attracting tourists looking for serene and luxurious getaways.
Governor Som Piseth highlighted the importance of the new port in unlocking the tourism potential of Kep’s archipelago, which comprises 12 islands and reefs. The port is expected to facilitate smoother transit for visitors and locals alike, thereby fostering economic growth through tourism. The improved accessibility will also enhance the quality of life for the island’s residents, making it easier to receive supplies and connect with the mainland.
In tandem with the government’s efforts, the private sector is actively participating in the development of Koh Tonsay. Over 140 hectares of the island are currently under development, aimed at transforming it into a premier eco-tourism destination. These developments are part of a concerted effort to position Kep Province as a leading choice for tourists seeking natural beauty, sustainability, and luxury in Cambodia.
