SIEM REAP — The Siem Reap-Angkor Tourism Management and Development Commission has launched a comprehensive roadmap to revitalize the region. Specifically, Senior Minister Thong Khon unveiled a four-step strategy designed to accelerate tourism recovery and enhance the overall visitor experience throughout Siem Reap province.
The wide-ranging plan focuses entirely on revitalizing the tourism value chain from end to end. Consequently, the Commission aims to restore the province’s vibrant economic activity and boost international arrivals.
1. Expanding Tourism Diplomacy and Rebuilding Trust
The first step of the roadmap prioritizes market expansion and the promotion of targeted tourism diplomacy. By focusing heavily on a unique “comparative value” strategy, the Commission aims to rebuild international trust. Furthermore, this aggressive marketing push intends to attract significantly more visitors during the traditional green season.
2. Improving Aviation Connectivity and Reforming Visa Policies
The second step addresses regional connectivity and physical accessibility. Therefore, the Commission is actively implementing new aviation incentive packages to increase direct flight connections.
In addition, authorities are streamlining border procedures and reforming visa policies. These adjustments will facilitate the development of highly affordable, competitive tour packages for global travelers.
3. Diversifying Products Beyond Angkor Archaeological Park
The third step centers strictly on elevating the visitor experience. Senior Minister Khon emphasized the critical need to diversify local travel products beyond the iconic Angkor Archaeological Park. Instead, the government will actively promote six designated priority areas within the province.
This multi-faceted approach includes reforming the current Angkor pass system to meet diverse tourist needs. Ultimately, this diversification will help reduce economic leakage within the local value chain.
4. Elevating Quality, Safety, and Digital Payments
The final step focuses directly on tourism quality, environmental safety, and financial convenience.
- Hygiene Standards: The Commission is mandating incredibly strict food hygiene standards across all hospitality venues.
- Eco-Campaigns: Officials are expanding the rigid “Plastic-Free” campaign to preserve natural heritage sites.
- FinTech Upgrades: The initiative enhances advanced digital payment systems for international visitors.
- Scam Eradication: Law enforcement targets the total eradication of tourist scams to ensure a secure, memorable experience.
A Collaborative Gateway to Cambodia
Senior Minister Khon stated that long-term success depends entirely on a collaborative partnership model. He noted that a single state institution cannot achieve this massive mission alone. Because of this, he called for the active participation of the private sector, local citizens, and global development partners.
Ultimately, the strategy aligns perfectly with the strategic vision of Prime Minister Hun Manet. The Prime Minister has frequently noted that promoting Siem Reap serves as a vital gateway to the entire nation. He asserted that “bringing tourists to Siem Reap is bringing them to the whole of Cambodia.”
