Strengthening of Diplomatic Ties and Economic Cooperation Between Cambodia and Viet Nam

by TBC

The relationship between Cambodia and Viet Nam has taken a significant leap forward, with both nations reaffirming their pledge to foster stronger cooperation, enhance economic development, and promote prosperity. This commitment was underscored during a pivotal meeting between Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on July 25, 2024.

The gathering was a platform where mutual respect and acknowledgment were evident. The Vietnamese side extended heartfelt gratitude towards Samdech Techo for his presence at Nguyen Phu Trong’s funeral, slated for July 26, 2024. This gesture was recognized as a continuation of the profound collaboration and friendship initiated between the two leaders, promising to uphold this legacy across various institutional levels including the prime minister’s office, National Assembly, and Senate.

The dialogue encompassed the strong bilateral ties that connect not only Cambodia and Viet Nam but also Laos, highlighting a robust tri-nation alliance. This collective enduring relationship was further emphasized through the shared expressions of condolence from Cambodia’s institutions, including the Senate, National Assembly, Royal Government, and the Armed Forces, following the loss of their revered national figure.

The discussions acknowledged the considerable strides made under Nguyen Phu Trong’s guidance in fostering enhanced cooperation and amity. Central to the conversation was the emphasis on mutual trust, the sacrifices made, and the solidarity demonstrated in the journey towards historical independence from colonial and imperial forces. A mutual vision for a sustained friendship was articulated, with leaders from Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam emphasizing the significance of continued engagement across various forums.

Both leaders voiced an ambitious goal to elevate trade relations and cooperation, with Viet Nam eyeing the status of a developed country by 2030 and aspiring to rank among the top 20 global economies. Simultaneously, Cambodia is poised to achieve a high-income status by 2050, under the visionary leadership of Samdech Techo and Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet.

A focal point of the discussion was the drive to boost infrastructure connectivity, particularly focusing on economic integration that fosters mutual benefit and complements the tourism and infrastructure sectors of both countries. Resounding commitments were made to prioritize the welfare of the people, especially in enhancing electricity infrastructure connectivity. An agreement was reached to extend Vietnam’s electricity supply to Cambodia – a move from 250 megawatts to potentially 400 megawatts or more to support Cambodia’s transition into Industry 4.0.

In a shared spirit of continued cooperation, both parties highly applauded the ongoing efforts in training and youth exchange programs. These initiatives aim to build lasting understanding, trust, and goodwill, paving the way for a durable friendship. Importantly, the leaders recognized and celebrated Nguyen Phu Trong’s pivotal role in nurturing human resources crucial for the future collaboration among Cambodia, Viet Nam, and Laos, cementing an enduring legacy of regional solidarity and development.
