PHNOM PENH — Cambodia has officially opened a new overland export route traversing Laos into China. This newly launched corridor will dramatically expand international market access for Cambodian products. Consequently, it offers major economic breakthroughs for farmers and businesses across the country’s northern and northeastern regions.
Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet praised the corridor during his speech at the National Fish Day celebration in Svay Rieng province. He hailed the route as a transformative trade gateway rather than a simple transit line.
“Opening each new market is never easy,” the Prime Minister emphasized. He noted that negotiations required significant time. However, he stressed that the long-term benefits for the public would far outweigh the effort. “Everything we do is for our people, our farmers, and the Cambodian public as a whole.”
Strategic Logistics Shift for Agricultural Exports
Historically, Cambodia has relied almost exclusively on maritime and air transport to move goods to China. Therefore, the introduction of this overland alternative marks a strategic shift in regional logistics. Extensive bilateral cooperation actively spearheaded this shift.
Khim Finan, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, confirmed the official launch. Officials signed the agreement during a ceremony in Vientiane on June 22. This milestone follows intense negotiations to streamline customs, clear administrative hurdles, and align cross-border transit procedures. Both Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Laos’ Ministry of Agriculture and Environment worked closely to finalize the deal.
Under the newly finalized agreement, Cambodia can immediately export six core agricultural products overland through Laos to China:
- Bananas & Mangoes: Fresh produce items that gain a fast route to Chinese retailers.
- Rice & Cassava: Bulk staple commodities that benefit from reduced overland freight costs.
- Pailin Longan & Durian: Premium fruits slated for rapid distribution to northern consumers.
Surging Bilateral Trade Performance
The opening of this corridor comes during a high-growth period for bilateral trade. For instance, Cambodia exported more than US $753 million worth of goods to China in the first five months of 2026 alone. This volume solidifies China’s position as one of the Kingdom’s primary export destinations.
Ministry officials and trade experts view the overland route as a vital mechanism. It effectively reduces shipping times and lowers logistics costs. Furthermore, the streamlined corridor strengthens the international market presence of Cambodian agricultural enterprises. It also provides direct economic relief to local farming communities.
