Strengthening Trade Relations: Hun Sen Highlights ASEAN-China Economic Ties

by TBC

In a significant appeal for heightened focus on economic interactions, Hun Sen, the current Acting Head of State of Cambodia, has spotlighted the critical importance of trade relations between ASEAN countries and China. Describing China as a considerable marketplace not only for the region but particularly for Cambodia, his commentary underscores the need for strategic engagement and cooperation to enhance mutual economic benefits.

During a meeting at the Senate Palace, Hun Sen, who also holds the position of President of the Supreme Privy Council to His Majesty the King of Cambodia, engaged with Tan Sri Michael Yeoh, the President of the KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific. This gathering was part of a courtesy visit by Yeoh, furthering discussions on regional trade dynamics.

Hun Sen took this opportunity to underscore the potential for economic growth and development through enhanced cooperation between ASEAN member states and China. He urged the KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific and the Asian Vision Institute (AVI) in Cambodia to join forces in promoting trade activities within the region. He emphasized the significance of leveraging existing trade agreements to this end, including the comprehensive frameworks like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), aiming to fortify economic ties and foster a more integrated market.

In his interaction with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Tan Sri Michael Yeoh shared insights from his recent dialogue with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. He highlighted the Prime Minister’s commitment to enhancing Cambodia’s economic and technological landscape, noting his agreement to lead and address two key forums slated for November of this year. The forums in question, namely the Global Chinese Economic and Technology Summit and the Asia Economic and Entrepreneurship Summit, are poised to attract a global audience of investors eager to explore the myriad of investment avenues available in Cambodia.

This strategic dialogue and forward-looking initiatives signal Cambodia’s intention to play a pivotal role in bolstering economic synergies within the ASEAN region and with China, aiming to unlock greater prosperity and opportunities for its people and beyond.
