Australia and Cambodia Reaffirm Strong Bilateral Ties and Commitment to Cooperation

In a heartfelt farewell meeting at the Peace Palace on April 8, 2024, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia Justin Whyatt expressed his gratitude to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet for the opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations and advance mutual interests during his diplomatic tenure.

The outgoing ambassador commended the robust ties between Australia and Cambodia, thanking the Cambodian Ministries and Institutions for their unwavering support and cooperation. He also briefed Prime Minister Hun Manet on the recent fruitful discussions between the prime ministers of both countries in Australia, highlighting the progress made in various areas of cooperation.

Ambassador Whyatt reaffirmed Australia’s steadfast commitment to supporting Cambodia’s human resource development through the provision of scholarships and the enhancement of collaboration between Australian and Cambodian universities. This ongoing support is a testament to the strong educational ties between the two nations and their shared vision for a brighter future.

The meeting also underscored the commitment of both countries to continued cooperation across priority areas, including agriculture, investment, trade, infrastructure, renewable energy, defense, and security. Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed satisfaction with the progress of cooperation discussed with his Australian counterpart and conveyed his gratitude for Australia’s support in these crucial sectors.

In terms of investment and trade, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the importance of fostering connections between the private sectors of both countries, confident that this would further strengthen bilateral relations and bring mutual benefits to their people. He also highlighted the Royal Government’s initiatives to promote infrastructure development and green energy projects by encouraging private sector involvement and investment.

Within the defense and security framework, the premier reaffirmed Cambodia-Australia’s commitment to enhancing defense capabilities and security through training and capacity building initiatives, showcasing the strong partnership between the two nations in maintaining regional stability.

The farewell meeting also provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on bilateral and multilateral cooperation, aimed at contributing to regional and international peace and prosperity. As Ambassador Justin Whyatt concludes his diplomatic tenure, the strong foundation of cooperation and friendship between Australia and Cambodia remains unwavering, paving the way for even greater achievements in the years to come.
