Advancing the Mekong-US Partnership with Global Cooperatives for Sustainable Progress

by TBC

In a decisive move to promote sustainable regional development, His Excellency MEAS Kim Heng, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Cambodia’s SOM Leader for Mekong Cooperation, participated in pivotal meetings for regional cooperation. His Excellency represented Cambodia at the Mekong-US Partnership (MUSP) Senior Officials’ Meeting as well as the Friends of Mekong (FoM) Senior Officials’ Meeting, which were held in the Lao PDR on the 5th and 6th of June 2024.

The gathering for senior officials of the Mekong-US Partnership delved into numerous important topics. The discussions were notably focused on reviewing progress and setting the course for the future of the partnership. An actionable plan for the years 2024-2026 was also on the agenda, with particular attention given to the preparatory steps for the much-anticipated Mekong-US Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Running concurrently, the Senior Officials of the FoM convened at the Mekong River Commission Secretariat for a strategic dialogue. The assembly was guided by the theme “Strengthening the Partnership for Connectivity and Resilience of the Mekong”. With representatives from Mekong nations and other collaborative partners in attendance, the conversation centered on central concerns for the sub-region’s progression. Priorities included emphasizing the necessity of fortifying connections across the region and enhancing its resilience.

In his role during both meetings, His Excellency MEAS Kim Heng expressed gratitude towards the United States and all participating members of the Friends of Mekong coalition for their ongoing and significant contributions towards the area’s advancement. He placed emphasis on the importance of continued and diversified support for initiatives within the Mekong cooperation framework. His call for aid addressed four key sectors: fostering partnerships between public and private entities, enhancing human resource development, stimulating agricultural and rural enhancement, and supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises along with fortifying the digital economy.

Steadfast in his conviction, His Excellency implored the various entities to consider increased contributions to tackle these pivotal areas. Such strategic partnerships and commitments are seen as essential in achieving inclusive growth, resilient communities, and the overall prosperity of the Mekong region for years to come.
