The highly anticipated Techo International Airport (TIA), originally scheduled to open in the first half of next year, is now set to officially commence operations in July 2025. The announcement was made during a site inspection yesterday by Mao Havannall, Minister in Charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation.
Minister Havannall, accompanied by a team of officials, visited the construction site to assess the progress of the $1.5 billion airport project. During a subsequent meeting, Havannall stated that the construction is 92 percent complete, with the remaining work expected to be finalized by March 2025.
Soy Sokhan, Secretary of State for the Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), confirmed the revised timeline for the airport’s opening. “We have decided on setting a timeframe for launching the Techo International Airport in July 2025,” Sokhan said during the inspection. He also emphasized the need to expedite the completion of construction, staff training, and air certification within the allocated time.
The Techo International Airport, developed by Cambodia Airport Investment Co Ltd (CAIC)—a joint venture between the Royal Government of Cambodia and Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC)—is strategically located 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh. Spanning 2,600 hectares across Kandal and Takeo provinces, it is designed to accommodate long-haul transcontinental flights and large aircraft, including the Airbus A380-800 and Boeing 747-800.
Once operational, the 4F-class airport is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting Cambodia’s tourism and economic growth.
Cambodia’s Expanding Aviation Sector
Cambodia currently operates three international airports: Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH), Sihanouk International Airport (KOS), and Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI). PNH and KOS are managed by Cambodia Airport, a joint venture between Vinci Airport and Muhibbah Masteron Cambodia, while SAI is operated by Yunnan Investment Holding Group.
According to the SSCA, Cambodia’s three airports handled 4.7 million air travelers from January to October 2024, marking a 21 percent increase from the 4.2 million passengers during the same period in 2023. Over 30 international and domestic airlines currently operate in Cambodia, connecting the country to key destinations across ASEAN, China, South Korea, India, Qatar, and the UAE.
The addition of TIA is expected to further enhance connectivity, support growing passenger demand, and cement Cambodia’s position as a regional hub for tourism and commerce.
