Cambodia Approves 36 National Standards to Boost Industry and Trade

by TBC

The National Standards Council (NSC) approved 36 new Cambodia Standards (CS) during its 29th meeting at the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation on December 26, 2024.

Chaired by Minister HEM Vanndy, the meeting evaluated 41 proposed standards, with 36 gaining approval. Three standards related to artificial intelligence (AI) and two revised standards for fish sauce and soy sauce are scheduled for review in the next council session.

The newly approved standards span multiple industries, including construction materials, chemicals, cereals, fruits and vegetables, management systems, electronics, rubber products, automotive components, cosmetics, wood products, and textiles.

Minister Vanndy emphasized the strategic importance of adopting international standards as national benchmarks. “By aligning with international standards, we can attract investment, strengthen local industries, promote trade, and ensure safety and quality for consumers,” he said.

The council assigned its 12 technical committees to identify additional high-priority standards for development, focusing on those that support exports and enhance the competitiveness of key domestic industries.

Minister Vanndy also directed the technical committees to draft implementation plans for the approved standards, including enhancing laboratory services to ensure compliance. Furthermore, he instructed the NSC secretariat to evaluate whether existing technical committees could oversee standards development for jewelry and precious stones or if a new dedicated committee should be formed.

Next steps following NSC approval include notifying international organizations like ISO and IEC, registering the standards nationally, and initiating implementation processes to facilitate business and institutional adaptation.

The Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to improving regulatory frameworks aligns with international best practices, ensuring enhanced quality, safety, and competitiveness for Cambodia’s industries in global markets.
