Kampot Province is poised to gain a significant religious tourism attraction with the inauguration of the Golden Temple of Lady Mao atop Dvaa Mountain. The temple is expected to become a key destination for visitors seeking both spiritual experiences and scenic beauty.
On January 13, 2025, a grand ceremony was held to mark the moving of the statue of Lady Mao into the temple’s altar. The event was attended by Kampot’s Provincial Governor, His Excellency Mao Thunin, and his wife, along with His Excellency Tak Hap, Chairman of the Provincial Council, his wife, and other provincial leaders. Buddhist monks also participated in the celebration, which took place in Laeang Village, Laeang Commune, Dang Tong District, Kampot Province, opposite the old monastery. The temple was constructed under the leadership of His Excellency Mao Thunin, Madam Hun Chanthy, and their family.
Mr. Soy Sinol, Director of the Kampot Provincial Tourism Department, expressed optimism about the temple’s potential to attract visitors, emphasizing its appeal as a religious tourism site. He highlighted the temple’s location on the mountain peak, offering fresh air and panoramic views of the surrounding mountain range and Kampot Province.
“The Golden Temple of Lady Mao will greatly benefit Kampot’s religious tourism sector due to its natural beauty and serene atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for tourists,” stated Mr. Soy Sinol.
Mr. Naing Yitho, Head of the Kampot Provincial Department of Cults and Religion, underscored the cultural and spiritual significance of the temple. He noted that the construction aimed to preserve and expand a place of faith, with ample space for worship. He further explained that the former Asrama of Lady Mao has been preserved, and the new temple provides additional space for Buddhist activities.
Upon completion, the Golden Temple of Lady Mao is expected to become a prominent site for both faith-based gatherings and tourism in the region. Construction of the temple began on April 18, 2024.
