PHNOM PENH — British multinational consumer goods company Unilever has expressed strong interest in expanding its commercial footprint in Cambodia. The company plans to scale its operations by establishing dedicated domestic manufacturing facilities in the near future.
Ali Tariq, Unilever’s Regional General Manager for Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, shared this strategic intent during a high-level meeting in Phnom Penh. Tariq met with Cambodia’s Minister of Commerce, Cham Nimul, to discuss the corporation’s long-term vision for the local market.
Transition to Local Manufacturing
The consumer goods giant has maintained a continuous business presence in the Kingdom for nearly 23 years. Currently, the company relies heavily on distributing imported products within the domestic market. However, the proposal to build direct production infrastructure marks a major operational shift toward localized supply chain logistics.
During the discussion, Tariq highlighted the company’s recent achievements and milestones. He explicitly noted ongoing efforts to diversify Unilever’s import sources. This strategy aims to strengthen overall supply capacity and efficiently meet the rising demand of Cambodian consumers.
Furthermore, the decision to invest in physical factories reflects the company’s long-term commitment. It underscores deep corporate confidence in Cambodia’s favorable investment and economic climate.
Regulatory Framework and Economic Impact
Minister Cham Nimul welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for Unilever’s sustained trust in the Royal Government of Cambodia. She noted that the company’s multi-decade presence has greatly improved consumer welfare. Specifically, it has offered local buyers a much wider variety of high-quality domestic market choices.
Additionally, Nimul detailed the Ministry of Commerce’s ongoing institutional reforms to support international businesses. She emphasized the government’s strict commitment to several key economic legal pillars:
- Intellectual Property Rights: The ministry is systematically strengthening the enforcement of and compliance with national IP laws to protect corporate brands.
- Fair Market Practices: Regulators are actively promoting fair market competition across all retail sectors.
- Equal Business Treatment: The government continues to ensure a completely transparent and level playing field for all foreign and domestic enterprises.
In conclusion, the minister expressed optimism regarding Unilever’s local manufacturing timeline. She stated that increased domestic production will offer greater product availability. More importantly, it will stimulate broader industrial development, drive immediate job creation, and accelerate growth across Cambodia’s manufacturing sector.
