Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen collaborate on demining efforts, showcasing the power of international partnerships in addressing global challenges and creating a safer future.
In a recent telephone conversation between Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen, the two leaders discussed the importance of continued cooperation in training Ukrainian demining specialists. This collaboration not only strengthens the ties between the two countries but also highlights the significance of international partnerships in addressing pressing global issues such as landmine clearance.
A Shared Goal: Clearing Landmines
The training of Ukrainian demining specialists in Cambodia is a powerful example of how countries can come together to tackle common challenges. In January, a group of 15 Ukrainians participated in a training exercise led by the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC), a government agency responsible for overseeing landmine and unexploded ordnance clearance in the country. This collaboration has equipped the Ukrainian team with valuable skills and knowledge that can be applied to clearing landmines in their own country, particularly in areas affected by the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Captain Arsenii Diadchenko, who led the Ukrainian team, expressed optimism about the training’s impact, stating, “It will be very helpful in clearing our area of Russian mines.”
Innovative Technology: The ALIS Mine Detector
During the training exercise, the Ukrainian team had the opportunity to learn from Japan’s Sato Motoyuki, a professor at Tohoku University who has been working on innovations in ground-penetrating radar technology. The Advanced Landmine Imaging System (ALIS) developed by Motoyuki is a hand-held device that combines a metal detector with an integrated ground-penetrating radar, allowing deminers to detect and identify buried mines more effectively.
This cutting-edge technology has the potential to revolutionize landmine clearance efforts, making the process safer and more efficient for demining teams worldwide. The collaboration between Ukraine, Cambodia, and Japan in developing and implementing this technology is a testament to the power of international partnerships in driving innovation and solving global challenges.
A Call for Peace: The Ukrainian Formula
In their conversation, President Zelensky also informed Prime Minister Hun Sen about the Ukrainian formula for peace and invited Cambodia to join in implementing concrete steps towards achieving it. This invitation further emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in addressing complex issues such as conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
Building a Safer Future Together
The collaboration between Ukraine and Cambodia in training demining specialists is a shining example of how countries can work together to address pressing global challenges. By sharing knowledge, resources, and technology, nations can build stronger bonds and create a safer, more secure world for all. As we continue to face an increasingly interconnected and complex global landscape, it is essential to recognize and embrace the power of international partnerships to drive positive change.
