Cambodia is poised to become a leader in digital development and skills with the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications’ ambitious plan to construct community technology centres in over 500 high schools across the country. The initiative is a significant step towards building digital literacy and facilitating access to technological resources for all Cambodians.
The move was announced by the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Chea Vandeth, during the inauguration ceremony of the UNESCO UNITWIN Cambodia: Data Science Joint Certification Programme, which was attended by South Korean ambassador Park Jung-Wook. Vandeth described the programme as an example of the collaboration between Cambodia, South Korea, and UNESCO on technology development, telecommunication and information.
The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has also launched Digital Talents, a contest to promote digital skills among high school students from all over the country. The contest will help identify and nurture talent in digital skills, shaping the future of Cambodia’s digital workforce.
To further contribute to the capacity building of the Kingdom’s digital skills, the ministry will construct 558 community technology centres. These centres will promote digital skills and upgrade the digital capacity of students, civil servants, and skilled workers. They will increase the ability to use digital technology among the community, enhancing digital literacy nationwide.
The community technology centres will be equipped with the latest technologies and resources, and will provide a platform for learning, development, and collaboration. These centres will help bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas, ultimately improving the quality of life of Cambodian citizens.
During the launch ceremony, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between South Korea’s Handong Global University and six universities in Cambodia. This MOU highlights the importance of international collaboration and the importance of cooperation between nations in shaping a digital future for all.
This initiative sets Cambodia on the path to becoming a leader in digital development, equipping its citizens with the skills, knowledge, and resources to compete in the global digital market. It is a significant step forward in building capacity and ensuring that Cambodia is prepared for the future of work. Cambodians can look forward to a bright and prosperous future with greater access to digital resources, which will improve their lives and those of future generations.
