On July 9, 2024, a significant meeting took place in Tokyo, Japan, marking a step forward in the military cooperation between the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. General Mao Sophan, the Deputy Commander-in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army, engaged in bilateral discussions with General Yasunori Morishita, highlighting the ongoing commitment of both nations to peace, stability, and regional development.

The dialogue underscored the longstanding friendship that has flourished between Cambodia and Japan since their diplomatic relations began in 1953. This relationship has advanced significantly, becoming a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2023, reflecting the deepened bonds and mutual respect between the two countries.

General Mao Sophan extended his appreciation towards the Government of Japan, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, and the Japanese people for their consistent support in maintaining peace in Cambodia, especially noting the crucial role that Japanese peacekeepers played in 1992. He emphasized Japan’s vital contribution to Cambodia’s ongoing development efforts, underscoring Japan’s role as an integral partner.

During their meeting, both military leaders reviewed the current regional and international landscapes, agreeing on the imperative need to continue enhancing their military collaboration. The discussions focused on multiple avenues for strengthening ties, including increasing military personnel exchanges at various levels, expanding human resource development initiatives, conducting joint military exercises, and fostering collaboration in demining efforts.

The commitment to broadening military cooperation manifests the shared vision of Cambodia and Japan for a stable and prosperous region. It not only reinforces the historical ties between the two nations but also lays the groundwork for future collaborative endeavors aimed at ensuring peace and fostering regional development. The discussions between General Mao Sophan and General Yasunori Morishita represent a significant milestone in the military engagements between Cambodia and Japan, setting the stage for deeper cooperation in the years to come.
