Cambodia Launches New Online System for Patent and Design Applications

by TBC

The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) has officially introduced a new online filing service for patents, utility models, and industrial designs, marking a significant advancement in modernising Cambodia’s intellectual property (IP) infrastructure.

The launch event, presided over by H.E. Minister HEM Vanndy, was attended by representatives from various ministries, private sector entities, domestic and international organisations, including the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and the Japan Patent Office (JPO).

MISTI highlighted that the new online filing service simplifies the process of registering patents, utility models, and industrial designs, making it more efficient and widely accessible. This initiative is part of Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its IP framework, aligning with international standards and ensuring protection for Cambodian and international innovations in global markets.

“The launch of the online filing service for patents, utility models, and industrial designs is another step forward in enhancing public service delivery, ensuring greater convenience for businesses and the public. Applicants can now submit their applications anytime, anywhere, eliminating the need for in-person visits and reducing logistical burdens for businesses,” stated H.E. HEM Vanndy during the event.

Intellectual property plays a pivotal role in protecting new ideas, enhancing trade, and stimulating industrial development for long-term economic growth.

“IP is not merely about protecting individual rights; it is the foundation of a national innovation ecosystem that promotes creativity, addresses global challenges, and fosters collaboration to bring forth groundbreaking solutions,” H.E. HEM Vanndy added.

The launch event also featured a National Capacity Building Workshop designed to train key stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, legal professionals, and government officials, on using the new online filing system effectively.

This initiative follows the launch of the patent and industrial design database in April 2024 on the Department of Industrial Property’s website, making this information publicly accessible within Cambodia and the ASEAN community.

The introduction of the new online filing system marks a critical step toward full digitalisation, enabling businesses, entrepreneurs, and creators to better protect their intellectual property while supporting Cambodia’s growing national innovation ecosystem.
