On the 27th of September, 2024, Cambodia and China marked a significant milestone, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. This celebration was a collaborative effort between Cambodia’s leading agencies, including the National Assembly and the Royal Government, and the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh. The event underscored the enduring friendship and strengthening ties between the two nations.
Minister of Civil Service, Hun Many, represented the Royal Government at the event. He highlighted the remarkable journey of China under the stewardship of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Over the past 75 years, China has experienced unparalleled growth in a myriad of sectors, achieving a level of development that has caught the global eye for its quality and comprehensiveness.
A key point of pride that Minister Hun Many touched upon was China’s accomplishment of its first centennial goal in 2021, which aimed at establishing a moderately prosperous society. He projected an optimistic future for China, especially under the continued guidance of the CPC with President Xi Jinping at the forefront. Another ambitious target awaits—the realization of China’s second centennial goal. This aims at reshaping China into a nation that is modern, prosperous, socialist, democratic, and harmonious by 2049, coinciding with the centenary of its founding.
Minister Hun Many emphasized, “China has firmly positioned itself at the heart of the global arena, becoming a pivotal player in various fields including the economy, trade, investment, finance, manufacturing, industry, science, and innovation.”
Echoing these sentiments, Yang Peou, the Secretary General of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, stressed the substantial uplift in China’s global standing since its establishment 75 years ago. He remarked on China’s significant contributions, especially in political spheres, where it has been instrumental in fostering a multipolar world. Beyond politics, China’s economic prowess remains unparalleled, with its influence pervasively felt across the globe.
Moreover, he reflected on the unwavering and strengthening bond between Cambodia and China, which has evolved from an “ironclad” to a “diamond” friendship. This enduring relationship is seen as a cornerstone for mutual prosperity in the face of a rapidly changing global landscape.
The Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, Wang Wenbin, also expressed his thoughts on the celebration. He recognized the transformative journey of the People’s Republic of China under the CPC’s leadership. The ambassador was optimistic about the future of Sino-Cambodian relations, expressing gratitude and respect for the friendship shared between the two nations.
Ambassador Wang announced the commitment of the Chinese Embassy to work diligently with Cambodian entities. The aim is to not only continue strengthening bilateral relations but to elevate them to new heights. He highlighted China’s support for Cambodia’s strategic visions for 2030 and 2050, emphasizing a collaborative effort towards constructing a robust community characterized by shared prosperity and a common future in the new era.
Indeed, the 75th-anniversary celebration of the People’s Republic of China in Phnom Penh was not just a reflection of China’s past achievements. It was a forward-looking event, underlining the solid foundations and ambitious future of the Sino-Cambodian friendship. This partnership, deeply rooted in mutual benefit and respect, looks set to navigate the complexities of the 21st century, setting a precedent for international relations and cooperation.
