Phnom Penh recently became the stage for the initiation of the Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchange Year 2024, marking a new chapter in cultural collaborations between these two nations. The “Tea for Harmony Yaji Cultural Salon,” hosted at the Royal University of Fine Arts, saw Chinese Ambassador Wang Wentian and Cambodian Minister of Culture and Fine Arts Phoeurng Sackona lead the celebrations. Distinguished officials and guests from both countries were in attendance, underscoring the significance of this gathering.
Ambassador Wang, in his speech, underscored the rich tea cultures prevalent in both China and Cambodia. He noted the considerable historical significance of tea in China, its recognition on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and its role in Cambodian daily life. Ambassador Wang emphasized, “The tradition of tea serves not only as a bridge fostering deep connections but also as a vehicle for cultural and civilizational exchanges between our nations.”
He further elaborated on the robust friendship and sincere cooperation that has typified relations between China and Cambodia, a bond that has remained resilient against the backdrop of evolving global dynamics.
Echoing these sentiments, Minister Phoeurng Sackona expressed gratitude towards the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia for its instrumental role in facilitating a broad spectrum of cultural and educational initiatives. These endeavors span artistic showcases, heritage conservation workshops, and expert exchanges, further cementing the bilateral friendship.
The salon itself was a vibrant display of cultural immersion, offering attendees the opportunity to savor Yunnan Province specialty teas, enjoy Chinese artistic performances, and participate in natural dyeing workshops—each activity a reflection of the rich cultural tapestry shared by both nations.
This event not only marked the beginning of the Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchange Year but also set the tone for a series of collaborative activities planned throughout 2024. These initiatives, spanning literature, tourism, media, and healthcare, are poised to fortify the camaraderie between the people of Cambodia and China, forging a deeper understanding and lasting friendships. This year of exchange serves as a promising avenue for both nations to explore new dimensions of their multifaceted relationship, further enriching their long-standing alliance.
