Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has outlined several significant initiatives aimed at bolstering the nation’s territorial integrity, addressing foreign political perspectives, and enhancing the tourism industry. These strategies are part of a broader effort to safeguard national interests and promote development in Cambodia.
During a gala dinner with the Cambodian Oknha Association and the Housing Development Association of Cambodia on Friday, August 2, Hun Manet discussed the ongoing border demarcation efforts with Vietnam, criticism from overseas analysts on the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Area (CLV-DTA), and the upcoming introduction of online visa fee payments at international airports.
Since 2007, Cambodia has made strides in demarcating its border with Vietnam to protect its territorial integrity. With the erection of hundreds of border posts in provinces like Mondulkiri, Ratanakkiri, and Kratie, Cambodia aims to affirm its territorial boundaries and enhance security. This initiative has led to the establishment of 84% of the border posts along the approximately 1,270 km land border shared with Vietnam.
The Prime Minister criticized overseas analysts who have recently expressed concerns over the CLV-DTA, accusing them of exploiting the situation for political gain. He stressed that these analysts are stirring confusion and promoting unrest, behaviors reminiscent of tactics used in other regions. Hun Manet emphasized the established goals of the CLV-DTA since 1999, which focus on transforming the border area into a development zone that fosters economic connectivity and infrastructure improvements across Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos.
In addition to these geopolitical measures, Hun Manet announced a significant advancement in Cambodia’s tourism sector. Starting from September 1, 2024, foreigners will be able to pay their visa fees online when entering through any of Cambodia’s three international airports. This move, designed to simplify entry procedures and reduce the reliance on cash transactions, highlights Cambodia’s commitment to modernizing its visa application process and improving the overall experience for tourists.
Hun Manet’s announcements reflect an integrated approach to addressing national security, responding to international criticism, and enhancing tourism infrastructure. These measures are indicative of Cambodia’s broader aspirations towards sustainable development, secure borders, and a welcoming environment for international visitors.
