The Ministry of Rural Development in Cambodia is spearheading an initiative to promote model villages in rural areas as part of the government’s Pentagonal Strategy. Chaired by Minister Chhay Rithisen, a recent meeting was held to discuss the preparation and implementation of these model villages, with the aim of improving the quality of life for citizens and fostering sustainable development.
According to Oeun Thearith, Director of the Department of Community Development, a model village in the Cambodian context embodies security, safety, infrastructure, decent living conditions, and the active participation of its residents in development activities. The model villages focus on six criteria: good governance, education and human resources, health and living environment, livelihoods, infrastructure, and technology.
Education and women’s participation were highlighted as crucial aspects during the meeting, with the Minister agreeing to prioritize these areas in the development of model villages. The objective is to empower communities, enable continuous growth, and serve as an exemplar for future village development.
To ensure the success of these model villages, partnerships with development organizations and the involvement of Provincial Departments of Rural Development will be sought. The “One Village, One Product” strategy will play a significant role in the economic activities of these villages, with efforts focused on identifying each village’s unique production potential and finding suitable markets for their products.
Pith Karuna, the Ministry’s spokesperson, emphasized that the model villages align with the government’s overall development strategy. Karuna stressed the importance of rural communities coming together to contribute and support the growth of their village, while the Ministry provides training and assistance in areas where necessary skills are lacking.
To date, 36 villages across Cambodia have begun their journey towards becoming model villages. Two villages in Takeo province have successfully developed their own “home economies,” no longer requiring support from the Ministry. These achievements highlight the potential and promise model villages hold for rural communities.
The Ministry of Rural Development is committed to diversifying rural economic activities, increasing household incomes, and creating employment opportunities through skills training. The overarching goal is to improve market access, facilitate sustainable development, and enhance the livelihoods of villagers.
The promotion of model villages in Cambodia represents a significant step towards achieving the government’s vision of better living conditions and sustainable development in rural areas. By providing infrastructure, training, and support, the Ministry of Rural Development aims to empower communities, increase economic opportunities, and create successful models for future village development. Through collaboration and dedication, these model villages have the potential to transform the lives of rural Cambodians and inspire others to follow suit.
