NPIC’s “Human Carrier Drone”: Revolutionizing Transportation and Emergency Response in Cambodia

by Surya Narayan

The National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia (NPIC) is making significant strides in the field of transport with their groundbreaking project, the “Human Carrier Drone”. Led by Lonh Vannsith and Chroay Sotheara, two talented mechanical engineering students, the team is pushing the boundaries of innovation to revolutionize transportation and emergency response in Phnom Penh.

The project is currently undergoing a redesign and modification phase to enhance the control system of the drone. With a focus on improving its aesthetic appeal, the team is also transitioning from aluminium to carbon fiber frames. This change not only adds strength to the drone but also reduces its overall weight, making it more agile and efficient.

Vannsith and Sotheara, the masterminds behind the “Human Carrier Drone”, believe that their creation has the potential to alleviate traffic congestion in Phnom Penh and revolutionize emergency response by providing a fast and efficient transportation option.

Despite facing challenges, including limited financial resources, the team remains steadfast in their commitment to the project. They recognize the need for financial investment to advance the “Human Carrier Drone” further and are actively seeking support from individuals and organizations keen to contribute to the growth of local technological products.

While their budget constraints have impacted the pace of development, the team continues to make progress. Rigorous testing, including over 70 test flights, has confirmed the flight capabilities of the drone. Capable of carrying loads up to 60 kg and reaching heights of 5-6 meters, the drone shows great promise for various applications, including emergency situations like transporting firefighters to higher floors of burning buildings.

The project has gained significant attention both locally and internationally, thanks to its innovative nature and the team’s viral test flight videos shared on social media. The NPIC students’ remarkable efforts have not only showcased their technical prowess but also positioned them as pioneers in Cambodia’s emerging drone aviation sector.

It is inspiring to see the NPIC team’s dedication to innovation despite their limited financial resources. The project’s success rests on their belief that future generations of NPIC students will continue their work and surpass their achievements. As initial team leaders, Vannsith and Sotheara are committed to mentoring and sharing their knowledge and experiences with younger students, ensuring the project’s continuity and driving further progress.

The “Human Carrier Drone” project is a remarkable example of Cambodian ingenuity and determination. With additional financial support and continued efforts from the NPIC students, the future looks bright for this groundbreaking innovation.
