The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, in collaboration with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, has introduced QR codes on new high school diplomas to facilitate efficient public services and enhance the accessibility of higher education in Cambodia. These QR codes serve as a tool to verify the authenticity and validity of diplomas through the online platform, “verify.gov.kh”.
The integration of QR codes on diplomas offers numerous advantages to new graduates, enabling them to easily share their qualifications with educational institutions and employers. This innovative system not only increases the value of a diploma but also simplifies the application process for higher education institutions.
Previously, students were required to obtain notarized paper copies of their graduation certificates. However, with the introduction of QR codes, this cumbersome process has been eliminated. All higher education institutions can now simply scan the standard QR code on the diploma to verify its authenticity through the “verify.gov.kh” platform.
The use of QR codes on high school diplomas is not a new concept, as they have been in use since the previous year. According to Khuon Vicheka, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, all newly issued diplomas can be easily checked for authenticity by scanning the QR code. This not only enhances the usability of the high school certificate but also acts as a deterrent against the use of counterfeit diplomas.
The results of the 2023 Bac II exams, in which 98,460 students passed the Baccalaureate exam (accounting for 72.89% of the 135,084 candidates), mirror those of the previous year. In 2022, 90,950 students passed the exam, representing 72.33% of the 125,735 candidates. These statistics highlight the consistent success and importance of the examination process.
Educational expert Dr. Quach Mengly expresses his support for the implementation of QR codes on high school diplomas, emphasizing their ability to simplify the verification process and facilitate certification at the Ministry of Education. This new system signifies a significant step forward for Cambodia’s education sector, demonstrating the country’s embrace of digital technology to improve public services and enhance accessibility.
While the initial rollout of the QR code system may not be flawless, Dr. Mengly is confident that the Ministry will continue to refine and improve its implementation. He emphasizes that the Cambodian government is committed to prioritizing education, health, and digital technology during its current term. By aligning words with deeds and demonstrating a high level of commitment, the government aims to foster prosperity in the country.
