On June 5, 2024, the British Embassy Phnom Penh gathered at Himawari Hotel Apartment to honor the 76th birthday of King Charles III. This annual event is not just a festivity but also a platform to foster the cultural and diplomatic links between the United Kingdom and Cambodia.

Organized with grandeur, the ceremony welcomed approximately 300 esteemed figures including members from the Royal Government of Cambodia, various diplomatic missions, academic institutions, civil society, and non-profit organizations, all reflecting the deep and diverse connections that the two nations share.

During the gathering, British Ambassador to Cambodia, Dominic Williams, emphasized the importance of the celebration, “The King’s Birthday Party reception is a moment of celebration for our friendship with Cambodia. It is an opportunity to show our appreciation for the collaborative work accomplished throughout the year, encompassing areas such as defence, security, human rights, and gender equality.”

Ambassador Williams highlighted the milestones achieved alongside Cambodia, notably the initiation of a political dialogue, cooperative efforts towards sustainable infrastructure, and the launch of a substantial environmental initiative in Virachey National Park. He expressed particular pride in the partnership with Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, emphasizing that education forms the foundation for Cambodia’s future prosperity drawn from the UK’s development programs and commercial engagements in the sector.

The celebration was made possible by generous sponsors including IDP Education, Everybody Counts, CamEd, Prudential, Seekers Independent Spirits, and Himawari Hotel. The event paid special attention to the realm of education, showcasing various UK-supported educational initiatives and those led by NGOs registered in the UK.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, offered reflections on behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia. He extended well wishes to His Majesty King Charles III and congratulated the UK’s people.

“On this significant historical milestone, we not only celebrate but reflect upon our enduring friendship and the ties that have connected our kingdoms since 1953,” Dr. Naron remarked. He appreciated the mutual benefits driven by decades of cooperation, evident through regular high-level exchanges, reinforcing this solid relationship.

Dr. Naron further acknowledged the UK’s impactful role in Cambodia’s education sector. He lauded the Chevening Programme for empowering over 200 Cambodian students with scholarships since 1993 and recognized the British contributions to NGO-run schools in Cambodia.

The Deputy Prime Minister applauded Ambassador Williams for his active support of education in Cambodia, citing the establishment of De Montfort University in Cambodia, several British curriculum-based schools, and the successful collaboration with IDP and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in executing the Cambodia International Debate and Public Speaking Championship Series.

The night’s festivities reached their pinnacle as Dr. Naron and Ambassador Williams stood together to wish His Majesty The King and The Queen, His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, and The Queen Mother a toast, rounding off a memorable birthday celebration dedicated to unity, cooperation, and a thriving partnership between the UK and Cambodia.
