The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications in Cambodia has announced plans to install free public wi-fi in coastal areas and other priority areas in Preah Sihanouk province. The initiative was discussed by Minister Chea Vandeth during the closing ceremony of a capacity building workshop for the Post and Telecommunication Department in Preah Sihanouk on May 25.
Minister Vandeth emphasized the ministry’s focus on strengthening and expanding telecommunication infrastructure in Sihanoukville. The plans for free wi-fi installation are part of the government’s efforts to improve digital technology access and capacity for civil servants and the public.
Since 2020, the government has organized a series of programs aimed at training and strengthening the capacity of civil servants in digital technology. The recent workshop is an example of the government’s commitment to continuous capacity development in line with the evolution of digital technology.
Kouch Chamroeun, Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, expressed the government’s support for the initiative in the rapidly evolving sector. He noted the importance of sub-national civil servants receiving ongoing capacity development to keep pace with digital technology advancements.
According to the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia, mobile phone subscribers in the country decreased from 21.7 million in 2019 to 19.5 million as of November last year. This decline is attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a significant drop in tourists visiting the country. However, internet subscriptions saw an increase from 16.1 million in 2019 to 17.2 million as of November last year.
The installation of free public wi-fi in coastal areas and other priority locations in Preah Sihanouk province is expected to boost digital access and connectivity for both residents and visitors, further supporting the growth of the digital technology sector in Cambodia.
