On February 8, 2024, the Cambodian government, in collaboration with its Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as well as the Cambodian Embassy in South Korea, took significant steps to improve passport services for Cambodian citizens and workers residing in South Korea. This initiative is part of a broader effort to streamline processes and provide essential support to Cambodians abroad.

The initiative was officially launched following the government’s decision to expedite the provision of passport services to Cambodian nationals and workers in South Korea, a directive that came into effect on January 10, 2024. This move aligns with the high-level guidance provided by His Excellency Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, during a meeting with workers and employers in the Somrong Tong district of Kampong Speu province on September 9, 2023.

Recognizing the importance of continuous support to the Cambodian community in South Korea, the Cambodian Embassy has prioritized the delivery of passport services as part of its first phase of implementation. During this phase, 106 Cambodian nationals who registered between January 10 and January 14, 2024, received their passports, marking a significant milestone in the embassy’s commitment to serving the Cambodian diaspora.

This endeavor reflects the Cambodian government’s dedication to ensuring the welfare of its citizens abroad, facilitating their legal status, and enhancing their access to essential services. By providing efficient passport services, the government aims to assist Cambodian workers in maintaining their employment and legal residency in South Korea, thereby contributing to their well-being and the broader national interest.

The collaboration between various Cambodian governmental bodies and the embassy in South Korea exemplifies a coordinated approach to diplomacy and citizen services, showcasing a proactive stance in addressing the needs of Cambodians living and working overseas. This initiative is expected to strengthen the ties between Cambodia and its international community, promoting a sense of unity and support among Cambodians globally.
