In a noteworthy achievement, Cambodian mathematics teacher Hay Chakrya has been recognised as one of the finest educators in the ASEAN region. The Princess Maha Chakri Award Foundation of Thailand has bestowed this esteemed accolade upon Chakrya, highlighting her exceptional commitment and dedication to teaching.

Chakrya, who teaches mathematics to Grade 12 students at Sok An Samrong High School in Takeo province, has exemplified the qualities and passion that have earned her this prestigious recognition. The award, established in 2015 by Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, aims to celebrate and honour the best educators across the ASEAN bloc.

Every two years, an evaluation committee invites the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport to nominate their top teachers, who then compete against exceptional educators from other ASEAN member states. This year, Chakrya’s outstanding teaching abilities and achievements caught the attention of the committee, leading to her well-deserved nomination.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in October, where Chakrya and the other winners will be presented with a $10,000 cash prize. In addition, they will receive a gold medal featuring the emblem of the Thai King and a certificate of commendation, further enhancing the recognition they rightfully deserve.

Chakrya’s nomination for the Princess Maha Chakri Award is particularly notable, as she was previously honoured with the Samdech Techo Hun Sen award for her exceptional teaching during the 2020–2021 academic year. This recognition further underlines her exceptional skills and dedication as an educator.

The Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport expressed its pride in nominating Chakrya for this esteemed award and acknowledged her exemplary teaching abilities. The ministry also disclosed the names of other nominees who have previously secured the title of “Best Teacher” at the Samdech Techo Hun Sen Awards. Touch Bandol from Wat Bo Primary School in Siem Reap province, Dy Sophoan from Kumrou Krong Primary School in Kampong Chhnang province, Loy Virak of Bun Rany Hun Sen High School in Kampong Chhnang, and Norn Dary, teaching at Kouch Mengly Toul Beng Primary School in Kampong Cham province, were among the names recognised.

Each of these educators has demonstrated unparalleled dedication and excellence in their field, showcasing the commitment of Cambodian teachers to providing quality education to their students. The recognition of these outstanding educators inspires and motivates others to strive for excellence in the realm of teaching.

As the award ceremony approaches, Cambodia eagerly awaits the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Chakrya and the other esteemed teachers. Their achievements serve as a testament to the transformative power of education and the vital role teachers play in shaping the futures of their students and societies at large.
