PHNOM PENH — Japan has pledged to continue supporting Cambodia and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors following a farewell meeting between outgoing Japanese Ambassador Ueno Atsushi and Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace.
Concluding his diplomatic mission, Ambassador Ueno noted steady progress in Cambodia-Japan relations. He thanked the Royal Government of Cambodia for its close cooperation, which enabled major advances in trade, investment, security, and defense.
Expanding Japanese Investment and Workforce Training
Ambassador Ueno highlighted growing investments by Japanese firms, pointing to major corporations such as Toyota. These investments have not only created local employment opportunities, but have also introduced advanced technologies and enhanced workforce skills through specialized training.
Reaffirming Tokyo’s long-term commitment, the ambassador assured that Japan will continue backing Cambodia’s economic transformation while strengthening bilateral ties.
Prime Minister Hun Manet congratulated Ambassador Ueno on the successful completion of his mission, praising his active role in advancing the diplomatic and economic relationship between both nations.
Pro-Business Reforms and Future Regional Hub Plans
To maintain a favorable business climate for foreign investors, Prime Minister Hun Manet outlined ongoing structural reforms. Key measures include:
- Restructuring the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC): Streamlining investment procedures and enhancing operational efficiency for foreign enterprises.
- Modernizing the Tax System: Creating a more transparent, predictable, and business-friendly regulatory framework.
Both sides also held forward-looking discussions on expanding cooperation in high-potential sectors. Future initiatives will focus on the digital economy, defense, and supply chain logistics—including major joint plans to develop the Sihanoukville Deep-Sea Port into a major regional hub.
