In the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk, Cambodia, a magnificent copper statue stands tall, depicting the legendary co-founders of the Funan Kingdom, Preah Thong and Neang Neak. Located at the namesake roundabout in Prey Nop district’s Ream commune, this awe-inspiring monument is a testament to Cambodia’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The Preah Thong and Neang Neak statue is an impressive sight, standing at 21 meters tall and weighing 60 tonnes, making it the largest copper statue in Cambodia. The statue sits on a 6.34-meter-high pedestal, bringing the total height to an impressive 27.34 meters. Facing the sea, the statue symbolizes the birth of Khmer land, culture, traditions, and civilization.

According to Khmer folklore, Preah Thong (also known as Kaundinya I or Y Da) and Neang Neak (Queen Soma or Y Ga) founded the pre-Angkorian state of Funan. The statue depicts their journey to meet their parents at the Naga palace in the depths of the ocean, known as Than Phu Chong Neak, which represents the origin of Cambodia’s land, culture, and customs.

The story of Preah Thong and Neang Neak has been passed down through generations, and their union has greatly influenced Khmer wedding customs. Chinese envoys Kang Tai and Zhu Ying reported that an Indian named Kaundinya established the state of Funan after receiving a magic bow in a dream. With this bow, he defeated the Naga princess Soma, the daughter of the Naga king, and later married her. Their lineage became the royal dynasty of Funan, and Kaundinya built a capital called Vyadhapura. The kingdom also came to be known as Kambojadeśa.

The Preah Thong and Neang Neak statue is the third notable statue in Preah Sihanouk province, joining the Preah Uma-Mahesor statue in Ream commune and the three-faced Siharaj statue in front of Angkor Brewery in Sihanoukville’s commune I.

Tourists visiting Cambodia should not miss the opportunity to witness this awe-inspiring monument. The Preah Thong and Neang Neak statue is a must-see attraction that offers a glimpse into the country’s fascinating history and cultural heritage. Its majestic presence and the captivating story behind it make it a truly unforgettable experience for all who visit.

When planning your trip to Cambodia, be sure to include a visit to the Preah Thong and Neang Neak statue in your itinerary. The statue’s location in the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk provides a perfect opportunity to combine your cultural exploration with a relaxing beach getaway. Immerse yourself in the legend of Preah Thong and Neang Neak, and let this magnificent monument be a highlight of your Cambodian adventure.
